Front Row at the Essence Music Festival

Music fans everywhere were given front row access to the 19th annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans via Instagram. Started in 1995 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine (@essencemag), “Essence Fest” is an annual festival celebrating African-American culture and music.

This year, the festival ran from July 4 - July 7 over Independence Day Weekend and featured performances from @beyonce, @treysongz, @charlielastnamewilson and many more artists. Attendees shared over 57,000 photos and videos from the festival using the #EssenceFest, #EssenceFestival and #EssenceFestival2013 hashtags. During the festival, photos from Instagram were broadcast on the main stage jumbotron, and the Essence team connected with the crowd by doing a nightly segment, complete with jokes and commentary, on the photos submitted by fans. In addition, social media screens throughout the convention center broadcast feeds of curated #EssenceFest photos, allowing fans and artists to share their experiences live.

Artists were excited to tell their stories as well. @beyonce built up excitement before her show on July 7, Brandy (@4everbrandy) took fans behind the scenes to rehearsals, and @maxwell shared with fans what it’s like to be on stage.

Video Highlights: Music

Instagram already has a thriving community of musicians, and video now makes it possible for artists to connect with their fans in a way they couldn’t before by giving silent, static images a voice and movement. Here are some great ways we’ve seen musicians and the music community using video on Instagram:

Get fans excited to purchase albums and concert tickets by offering previews of songs or announcing tours.

Bring fans along with you and show them a unique point of view, whether it be from the concert stage or your everyday life.

Connect authentically with fans by singing or performing live.

Let fans experience your music directly in a way they couldn’t before.

Here are a few other ideas for how the music community can use video on Instagram:

  • Take your fans on tour: take video from on-stage and add them to your photo map so fans can follow along your tour stops
  • Crowdsource from fans: collect fan videos from concerts and display them online (ideally on a visual map) so that fans everywhere can get a front row view
  • Make a music videogram: create an exclusive 15s music video to complement an existing video or for your personal favorite song from your album

To learn about the other features in the Instagram 3.0 release, check out our updates on the Instagram blog. Download Instagram 3.0 for iOS and Android .

We’re excited to introduce Photo Maps! Your Photo Map displays all of your geotagged Instagram photos on an interactive world map that users can explore.

Creating a Photo Map adds a new dimension to your brand story. Bands like Young the Giant have been using Instagram on tour to share photos from the road. Now with Photo Maps, their fans can view collections of photos arranged by location or can zoom into individual photos from a stop in their own hometown.

News organizations can highlight current events happening around the world. Non-profit organizations can show the impact they’re having in local villages. Fashion brands can showcase runway collections from Fashion Week in Paris, London and Milan.

We’re excited to see how businesses and organizations use their Photo Maps to engage with users in a new and interesting way!
